나비효과 The Butterfly Effect

‘나비의 펄럭임과 같은 아주 작은 요인들이 종국엔 지구 반대편에 태풍을 일으킬 수도 있다’.

– 카오스(혼돈) 이론

“그동안, 사람들은 대형 폭탄이나 미치광이 정치인, 대지진, 혹은 대규모 인구이동과 같은 대형 사건들에 의해 세상이 변한다고 생각했었다. 하지만 카오스 이론에 따르면, 세상을 바꾸는 것들은 아주 작은 것들이다. 아마존 정글에서 펄럭인 나비의 날갯짓으로 인해, 이후 유럽의 절반이 폭풍으로 황폐화된다.”

오늘날의 기후변화, 지구온난화, 삼림파괴, 토지와 천연자원에 대한 과잉개발, 수산자원의 남획, 전쟁, 커져가는 인간의 이기심, 과소비는 지구상의 생명체를 위협하고 있다.

내가 제안하는 설치물은 자유롭게 이동하는 나비의 만화경을 보여주며, 이는 신섞기시대로의 이동이다. 한 무리의 나비들은 또 다른 조우와 함께, 같은 목적지를 향해 날아간다. 이 설치물은 우리가 행하는 모든 작은 행위들과 우주에서 일어나는 모든 사건들이 다른 모든 것들에 미치는 영향들에 대해 고민해보는 계기를 마련한다. 잔잔한 호수에 던져진 작은 조약돌 하나가 연속된 파문을 불러일으킬 수 있다. 모든 생물은 서로에게 영향을 미친다. 하나의 생명이 죽으면, 그의 자손이 태어나지 않는 것이므로, 이는 생태계에 영향을 미칠 것이다. 자연에 존재하는 모든 존재들은 상호연결적이며 상호의존적이다.

나의 작품은 우리와 자연 사이의 관계를 재발견하고, 더 나은 미래와 세상을 위해 행동과 사고에 있어 작은 변화를 실천하도록, 관람객들에게 영감을 주는 것이다.

우리들 각자는 자연과의 균형과 조화를 추구함과 동시에, 꿈을 꾸고, 희망을 창조하고, 변화를 이끌 수 있는 나비 가운데 하나가 될 수 있다.

It used to be thought that the events that changed the world were things like big bombs, maniac politicians, huge earthquakes, or vast population movements, but the things that change the world, according to Chaos theory, are the tiny things.’ A butterfly flaps its wings in the Amazonian jungle, and subsequently a storm ravages half of Europe.”

In today’s world, climate change, global warming, destruction of forest, overexploitation of lands and natural resources, overfishing, war, growing selfishness of man and overconsumption are threatening life on earth.

My proposed installation shows a kaleidoscope of butterflies on its way to migration – moving towards a neomixed era. A fleet of butterflies with neobalanced encounter flying towards the same destination…The installation provokes reflection about how every single action of ours and every happening in this universe has an impact on something else. A single pebble thrown in the water can disrupt still water and create chronicles of ripples. Every creature impacts each other. If a creature dies, his offspring will not take birth which will impact the ecosystem. All things in nature and life are interconnected and interdependent.

My work is also to inspire the viewer to rediscover our relation with nature and to encourage all of us to make small changes in our action and thinking that can bring about a change for a better world and future for humanity.

Each one of us can be one of these butterflies who can dream, create hope, bring about a change while pursuing harmony and balance with nature.
