​<매미 Maemi - Cicada>

현재의 인간 문화를 재야생화하기 위해서 우리가 일상적으로 사용하는 달력, 그리고 시간 인식을 재조정하여, 다른 생물들의 수명을 의식하고, 자연의 주기적인 시간 단위를 받아들일 필요가 있다. 항상 변하는 자연과 야생은 하나의 과정이지 장소가 아니다.

연미산자연미술공원에 있는 나무들 주변에 세워질 7개~12개로 된 기둥들은 한국의 여러 가지 동식물의 다양한 삶의 주기들, 그리고 태양, 달, 행성들, 계절들의 각기 다른 주기들을 해석한다. 관람객들은 각 나무 주변을 이동하며 주기를 완성하면서 작품을 접하게 된다.

이 작품은 여름의 매미 소리에 영감을 받은 것으로 이 매혹적인 곤충은 일생의 전반부를 땅을 파고 들어가 대략 3년에서 17년을 땅 밑에서 보낸다. 그리고는 가장 가까이 있는 나무에 기어 올라가서 생의 마지막 한 달을 짝짓기를 위해 시끄럽게 울면서 보낸다. 자연의 주기에 대하여 우리의 눈을 뜨게 하는 자명종 소리이다!

Rewilding our present human culture requires a reset of our mechanical calendars and linear sense of time to become aware of other lifespans and submitting to nature's cyclical measures of time. Always changing, nature and wilderness is a process, not a place.

The series of seven to twelve columns constructed around trees in the Yatoo nature art park will interpret different cycles of nature time, such as the moon, sun, seasons and planets, based upon the lifespans and metamorphosis of different flora and fauna found in Korea. The viewer encounters the work by moving around each tree column in order to complete a cycle.

The work is inspired by the summer sound of the Cicadas These fascinating insects spend the first part of their lives underground, burrowing up en masse at specific intervals of 3 to 17years to climb up the nearest tree and noisily mating the last month of its life. Nature's wake up call!
