​<숲에서 길을 잃다 Lost in the Woods>

나는 특이한 지각적 위치에서 숲을 선보여 관람자가 고정관념에 근거한 해석에서 벗어나도록 이끌고자 한다.

나의 작품에 대한 제안서는 다양한 종류(12가지)의 숲으로 이루어진 초현실적인 “숲”을 설명한다. 나는 색, 재료, 구조, 소리가 인지하고, 촉감으로 느끼고, 보고, 들을 수 있는지를 기준으로 그 차이들을 설명한다. 작품 중간에 설치한 장치를 통해 우리는 모든 종류의 숲의 소리를 들을 수 있다. 그래서 우리는 숲을 살아 있는 하나의 유기체로, 또 하나의 재료로 인식할 수 있다. 각각의 숲은 그 모양, 성격, 나무의 생태계, 불어오는 바람, 안에 사는 동물, 가령 새의 지저귐처럼 동물들이 어떤 소리를 내는가에 따라 다양한 소리를 낸다… 그래서 숲은 하나의 거대한 살아 있는 유기체로, 들을 수도 있고, 동시에 만지고 볼 수도 있다. 우리 주변에 있는 가장 자연스러운 재료를 가지고, 모든 숲의 종류를 최소화한 유기체 형태인 구(球)의 형태로, 초현실적인 것처럼 보이지만 동시에 아주 현실적인 분위기를 만들고 싶다.

자본주의 사회는 우리에게 인간의 욕구를 우선으로 하는 하나의 필터를 통해 세상을 보도록 가르쳐 왔다. 그래서 대부분 사람은 스스로 생각하고, 인식하기를 원하지 않고, “눈을 뜨기를” 원하지 않는다. 왜냐하면, 그것이 훨씬 더 편리하고 책임질 필요도 없기 때문이다.

우리가 인간 중심적 접근방식에서 벗어나는 순간, 우리는 수많은 해석의 가능성에서 길을 잃은 것처럼 느낄 수 있다. 나는 인간 중심적 관점이 단지 한 가지 관점에 불과하고, 반드시 사실이 아닐 수도 있다는 점을 지적하고 싶다.

예를 들면, 숲은 새, 벌레, 혹은 사슴 등의 시각과 색다른 관점에 의해 인식된다. 그래서 자연은 여러 가지 형태로 새롭게 창조되고 제시될 수 있다.

그래서 설치작품 “숲에서 길을 잃다”는 우리에게 이런 관점에서 벗어나 길을 “잃는 것”에 대하여 두려워하지 말기를 권한다. 길을 잃는다는 것은 인위적인 방향이나 해석에 묶여 있던 것을 풀어준다는 의미이기 때문이다.

모든 것은 우리가 변화를 해석하고 언어로 바꾸려고 노력하는 대신, 변화와 함께 흘러가고 그 일부가 되는 거대한 과정이다. 모든 해답은 세상을 제한하고 속박한다. 어떤 것을 해결하는 대신, 우리는 새로운 질문들을 던질 필요가 있다.

이 설치작품은 과학적인 관찰의 대상이 될 수도 있다. 어떤 종류의 나무들이 서로 이웃하고 있는지, 나무들은 기후 조건에 어떻게 대처하는지, 세월이 지나면서 나무들은 어떻게 변하는지, 나무들이 어떻게 숲의 소리를 내는지 등 관찰의 대상이 될 수 있다.

I would like to present the forest from unusual perceptual positions in order to tip the viewer out of an interpretation based on stereotypes.

My artwork proposal depicts a surreal “forest” made up of different types of wood(I selected 12types of wood) and the differences between the types as color, material, structure and sound become perceptible, tactile, visible and audible. With the players mounted in the middle of the installation, we can listen to the sound of the forest of all types of wood, so that the wood can be perceived both as a set of a living unit and as a material. Each forest generates different sounds due to the shape, character and ecosystems of the trees that make it up, as the wind blows through it, which kind of animals, living being live in it, what sounds are generated by them, like birds chirping, etc... So, the forest will be heard as a large living organism and at the same time the wood will be palpable and visible as dead matter. I want to create a seemingly surreal but very real atmosphere from this most natural material that surrounds us and minimize all its types into the least possible organic shape, a sphere.

Capitalist society has taught us to perceive the World through a filter that puts our own needs in priority. Probably this is the reason why most of human does not want to think on their own, to perceive, they do not want to “open their eyes” because it is much more convenient to join stereotypes, there is no responsibility in that.

The moment we experience a feeling that tears us away from the approach supported by the human point of view, we may feel lost in the multitude of interpretations of possibilities. I would like to point out that interpretation from our own point of view is just a point of view, but not necessarily reality.

For example, a forest is perceived according to different priorities and perspectives by a bird, a woodworm, or a deer. So, Nature can be newly created or presented in various forms.

The “Lost in the Woods” installation wants to encourage us to wake up and not be afraid to get “lost” because the moment we get “lost” it means that we have let go of something that was tied to an artificial direction or interpretation.

Everything is part of a huge process in which we can float along with change, to become part of change instead of trying to decipher and connect change to words. Because every solution forms bonds and encloses the World. Instead of solving it something, we might need to formulate new questions.

The installation can also be subject to scientific observation, tracking how different types of trees are placed next to each other, how they respond to weather conditions, what color and structural differences they have, how they change over time, and how they sound like a forest.
