​<한 사람의 손 Obaakofuor Nsa>

허버트 리브스(Hubert Reeves)는 언젠가 이런 말을 했다: “인간이 가장 미친 동물이다. 인간은 보이지 않는 신을 섬기면서, 보이는 자연은 파괴한다. 지금 인간이 파괴하는 자연이 그가 섬기는 신이라는 것을 모르고 있다”. “화해”라는 개념은 적대적 상태에서 우정과 치유의 상태로 변화하는 것을 의미한다. 다툼과 오랜 적대의 시기가 지난 후, 화해는 감정과 태도에 있어서 급진적인 변화이다. 화해가 이루어질 때, 개인 간의 관계는 새로워지고, 치료된다.

공정하고 균형 잡힌 세상에서, 조화는 우호적 관계의 메아리가 된다. 평화의 중요한 특징은 깨끗하고, 활기 있고, 역동적인 환경의 존재라는 것이다; 이는 상쾌한 기분과 평온함을 길러준다. 지구상에 활기 있는 다양한 생물의 존재가 건강한 환경을 보장한다; 그것 없이 지구상의 생명체는 불가능하다. 과거의 인간은 자연과 친밀했다. 그러나 최근에는 과도한 자본주의가 부패와 탐욕을 조장하여, 환경에 대한 배려가 우선순위에서 밀려났다. 한때 아름다웠던 지구가 과도하게 착취당해왔다. 이 설치작품은 자연과의 화해를 위한 시도이다.

작품의 제목 “Ↄbaakofoↄ Nsa” [한 사람의 손]은 아프리카 가나에 있는 종족 아칸(Akan)족의 속담 “Onipa baakofoↄ nsa nnso Nyame ani kata” [한 사람의 손이 신의 두 눈을 가릴 수 없다] 에서 따온 말이다. 가나에 사는 에웨이(Ewe)족 속담에도 비슷한 것이 있다: “Atsi deka metuna xↄ o,” [통나무 한 개로 집을 지을 수 없다]. 생태계를 안전하게 지키기 위하여 우리는 모두 함께 협력해야 한다.

Hubert Reeves once noted that: “man is the most insane species. He worships an invisible God and destroys a visible Nature. Unaware that this Nature he´s destroying is the God he’s worshiping” The idea of “reconciliation” embodies a change from being in a state of enmity to one of friendship or healing. After a period of quarrel or protracted hostility, reconciliation presents a radical shift in both sentiments and attitude. When this occurs, intimate and personal relationships are renewed or repaired.

In a fair and balanced world, harmony becomes an echo of amity. A significant characteristic of peace is the existence of clean, vibrant and dynamic environment; one that nurtures elation and tranquility. The existence of a vivacious biodiversity on earth governs a healthy environment; without which life on earth is impossible. Humans used to be friendly to the environment, but recently, the excesses of Capitalism have dispersed a noxious rancor of corruption and voraciousness among some people, to the extent that care for the environment is no longer a priority. Our once beautiful planet is over exploited. This installation prompts us to attempt a reconciliation with nature.

The title “Ↄ baakofoↄ Nsa” (one person’s hand) was inspired by an Akan proverb “Onipa baakofoↄ nsa nnso Nyame ani kata” which is translated as(a singular person’s hand cannot cover the eyes of God). A similar idea is captured in the Ewe proverb, “Atsi deka metuna xↄ o,” meaning (one log of wood cannot build a house). We need not to take our environment. Let us work together to do our little bit of “Sankɔfa” for the safeguard of the ecosystem.
