​<달빛 드로잉 Moonlight Drawing>

온 시내를 비추는 밝은 달(萬川明月)

달은 ‘맑음’의 아이콘(icon)이다.

달의 또 다른 속성은 ‘변화’와 ‘이동’이다. 달은 이지러지고 다시 차기를 반복한다. 또 기울었다 싶으면 다시 높이 떠오른다. 시인은 달의 움직임을 ‘구름에 달 가듯’ 한다고 표현했다. 달은 ‘강나루 건너 밀밭 길’을, ‘외줄기 남도 삼백리 길’을 따라 쉼 없이 간다. ‘술 익는 마을’마다 어디든 마다치 않고 간다.

달을 이야기하며 정조(正祖, 1752~1800)를 빼놓을 수 없다. 그는 성리학적 이념에 근거하는 성인(聖人) 군주를 꿈꿨다. 그는 온 백성과 신하들의 ‘왕’이자 ‘스승’인 군사(君師)가 되고자 했다. 따라서 그는 ‘온 시내를 비추는 밝은 달의 주인(萬川明月主人翁)’임을 자처했다. 하나의 달이 크고 작은 시내에 제각각의 모습으로 반영되는 것은, 이치(理)는 하나지만 개개의 사물과 상황에 따라 다르게 나타나는 것을 의미한다. 정조는 달의 이미지를 극적으로 활용한 임금이다. 정조가 쓴 「만천명월주인옹자서(萬川明月主人翁自序)」는 태극, 음양 등 만물의 생성과 변화 등 성리학적 우주관을 담은 심오한 글이다.

현대 도시의 밤은 휘황한 인공조명으로 불야성을 이룬다. 가로등과 질주하는 자동차 램프, 총천연색의 광고 조명으로 인해 밤은 낮보다 더 눈이 피로하다. 각박한 삶을 살아가는 현대인들은 밤이건 낮이건 하늘을 쳐다볼 여유조차 없다. 현대인들은 은은한 달빛의 ‘서정’을 잊은 지 오래다.

달을 황토 돛배에 설치하고 아름다운 별자리와 달을 어린이들에게 자연 학습 체험과 우주에 대한 꿈을 갖도록 한다. 이 작품을 통해 현대인들이 잊고 있는 달의 서정성을 환기시키고자 한다. 아름다운 자연 속에서, 또 풍경의 가변성과 공기 흐름에 따라 유동하는 달과 별들을 설치한다.

자연과 변치 않는 달과 별의 이미지를 환기시키고, 지역 주민과 관광객들에게 비엔날레의 아름다운 환경과 분위기를 연출한다.

The Bright Moon Shining over All the Streams

The moon is the icon of 'cleanness'.

Other attributes of the moon is 'change' and 'movement'. The moon repeats the cycle of waxing and waning. A poet describes a wayfarer as 'walking as if the moon runs through cloud,' The moon runs 'along the bank of the wheat field', 'along a single long lane toward the southern region' and 'passes 'the village full of liquor-brewing smell'.

When we talk about the moon, we cannot help but mentioning King Jeonjo (正祖, 1752~1800). He dreamed of becoming a sage king in neo-Confucianism. He wanted to be a king ruling the country, and, at the same time, 'a teacher' of his subjects and the people. Accordingly, he wanted to be 'the moon shining over all the streams (萬川明月主人翁)’. The meaning that the moon shines all over the streams is that, while the basic truth of his rulership is one, it can vary depending on the objects and situations. King Jeonjo was the man who dramatically used the image of the moon. 「The Preface of The Guy Who Is The Bright Moon Shining over All the Streams (萬川明月主人翁自序)」 is his profound writing on his neo-Confucian view about the universe using the concepts of taegeuk or yin and yang.

The night of modern city is full of artificial lights. With street lights, headlights of running cars, and colorful advertising lights, our eyes become more tiring at night than daytime. Modern men leading busy and tough lives do not have leisure time to look up at the sky. Modern men forgot the 'lyric' of faint moonlight long ago.

This work put the moon on the sail boat made of ocher soil, and decorated with beautiful constellations. The moon and stars move with wind. This work is designed to make children learn nature and imagine the universe, and remind modern men of lyric of the moon.

This work will provide spectators with the image of the moon and stars, and the beautiful atmosphere of the biennale.
