​<​트리 랩 (기초) Tree Wrap (Basics)>

지난 6년간 나는 “기초”라는 이름으로 일련의 공공개입 작품들을 제작해 왔다. 이 작품들은 일시적인 공공미술에서 형태, 공간, 그리고 물질의 조합에 대한 추상화된 개념을 탐구하는 것이다.

제출된 작품 표본들은 이러한 작품군과 관련이 있다.

루마니아 국립현대미술관에 전시할 설치작품의 일부로 고안된 이 연작은 그동안 미국에서 상당히 많은 수의 비슷한 작품들이 만들어졌다. 각 작품은 독립적이고, 그 장소에 특별한 것이지만, 이 작품은 현대의 공공미술과 관계된 일련의 탐구작품으로 이해되어야 한다. 그리고 각 작품은 2x4 목재에서 나온 재료와 공식적 논리를 공유한다. 내가 2022 금강자연미술비엔날레 기여하고 싶은 것은 이러한 나의 이력과 공공미술, 그리고 재료적 민감성의 범주 안에 있다.

‘트리 랩 (기초)‘은 지금도 진행 중인 연작 ’기초’을 통해 지난 6년간 탐구해 온 재료적, 공공 미술적인 언어를 따른 것이다. 이 작품의 최종 모습과 규모는 작품이 설치될 장소에 따라 결정될 것이고, 내가 제시한 렌더링/제안서는 나의 의도를 자세히 설명한 것으로 이해되기를 바란다. ‘트리 랩 (기초)‘은 실제로 존재하는 나무 한 그루 혹은 몇 그루의 둥치를 나선형 조개 껍질 모양으로 감싸는 것이다. 그 모습은 과장된 크기의 화분과 다소 비슷할 것이고, 재료에 있어서나 시각적으로 조각과 나무는 공생적 관계를 획득할 것이고, 나무와 조각이 함께 거주하는 생태적인 작은 서식지 역할도 할 것이다.

Over the past 6 years I have been engaged with a series of public interventions under the title “Basics”, exploring an abstracted notion of form, space and material assembly in temporary public sculpture.

The submitted work samples all relate to this body of work.

Conceived as part of a larger museum installation at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Romania, the series has since had a substantial number of iterations throughout the US. While each object is individual and specific to its site, the work wants to be understood as a series of explorations relating to the specifics of temporary public art, and each piece shares a material and formal logic that is derived from 2x4 dimensional lumber. It is within this trajectory and general formal and material sensibility that I would like to contribute to the Geumgang Nature Art Biennial 2022. “Tree Wrap (basics)” will follow the material and formal language explored over the past 6 years through the ongoing work series “Basics”. The final shape and scale of the work will be conceived in response to the site and the rendering/proposal should be considered as concept to illustrate the intent. “Tree Wrap (basics)” to engages with an existing tree or trees, and to wrap the tree trunk with a spiraling shell. The resulting shape will be somewhat akin to a over-dimensional vase, where the sculpture and the tree attain a symbiotic relationship, both materially and visually, as well as in regards to the ecological micro-habitat that the tree and sculpture inhabit and create.
