​<기계적 나무 - 금강 Mechanical Tree – Geumgang>

2018년 브라질 아마존 LABVERDE 레지던시 공간에 있을 때, 우리는 환경, 예술, 과학, 인간 사이를 연결하는 방법에 대하여 논의를 했었다. 계속되는 벌목으로 인하여 아마존이 사막화될 가능성에 직면하면서, 나는 숲의 규모에서 어떤 증산작용이 일어나는지와 한 그루의 큰 나무가 매일 1,000ℓ의 물을 증발시키는 것에 대하여 생각해 보았다. 생물펌프이론에 의하면, 아마존과 같은 열대림은 바람을 일으키는 기압을 조절하는데, 열대림이 없는 경우보다 훨씬 큰 정도로 수증기를 내륙으로 보낸다는 것이다. 자연을 희생해 우리 문화를 이끄는 기술의 발달에 대해 생각하면서, 나는 생태계의 증산작용을 수행할 기술적인 대용물로서 ‘기계적 나무들’에 대한 설계를 만들기 시작했다.

금강에서의 작업은 신화와 역사, 그리고 그 설치 작품을 위해 선택된 장소의 현재의 시점을 모두 고려해 진행될 것이다. 이 작품은 우리 인간의 자연과의 관계가 미래에 어떻게 될 것인가에 대한 이야기를 만들고 공유하고자 하는 나의 프로젝트의 연장선에 있다. ‘기계적인 나무-금강’은 나무들이 한 지역과 세계에 제공하는 생태적 서비스에 대해 사람들의 관심을 끌고자 하는 나의 작업의 연속이다.

이 설치 작품은 그 공원에 있는 하나 이상의 나무들을 증축하는 방식이며, 일련의 모듈형 조형물로 구축될 것이다. 여러 가지 기하학적 형태를 가지는 이 조립식 부품들은 철망으로 고정될 것이다. 철망을 기초로 해서 그 위에 인공적이거나 자연적인 부품들이 세워질 것이다. 철망은 또한 설치 작품에 생명을 불어넣는 역할을 할 것이다. 나무 주변에, 가지나 둥치에 설치하기도 하고, 때로는 가지나 둥치를 감싸기도 하면서, 나무를 마치 하나의 기계처럼 보이게 할 것이다.

이 프로젝트는 우리가 생태계 서비스에 대하여 기술 문명에 의존하거나, 기술 문명이 보조적인 역할을 담당하는 다양한 종류의 미래를 염두에 둔다. 나는 가능하다면 재생되고, 발견되고, 사용된 재료를 가지고 작업할 예정이다. 생태계 서비스에 관한 기술적 대용물을 생각하는 것은 나에게 자연의 역할에 대한 새로운 감사와 경외감을 주었다. 이 작업을 하면서 나는 위험한 지구공학에서 인류에게 도움이 되는 생태모방프로젝트까지 자연을 희생하고 그 대신 기술로써 해결하려는 모든 시도에 대하여 의문을 가지게 되었다.

At the 2018 LABVERDE residency in the Brazilian Amazon we talked about ways of fostering a connection between the environment, art, science and people. Learning about the likely desertification of the Amazon due to continuing deforestation, I thought about what could perform transpiration at the scale of the forest; where a single large tree can evaporate a 1000 liters of water into the atmosphere every day. According to the Biotic Pump theory, forest like the Amazon regulate pressure creating winds that move moisture inland much further than would be possible without the forest. Thinking about technological progress at the expense of nature that is driving our culture, I started creating designs of a technological analogs for the ecosystem services of transpiration -“Mechanical Trees.”

The work at Geumgang will take into consideration mythology, history and the present moment of the chosen site for the installation. The work continues my project in sharing and creating stories about what our future relationship with nature might be like. “Mechanical Tree-Geumgang” continues my work in drawing attention to the ecosystem services trees provide locally and globally.

The sculpture installation will be a series of constructed modular pieces that will augment one or more trees in the park. These modular pieces will be of various sized geometrical shapes made as frames with wire mesh. The mesh will be the dominant surface to which other found natural and/or man-made objects will be mounted to. The mesh surface can also be projected upon animating the installation. Scattered around the tree the pieces will be mounted to branches and trunks sometimes encasing them transforming the tree to evoke a machine.

The projects takes into account a range of possible futures where technology is either relied upon or plays a supportive role in maintaining ecosystem services. I will be looking to work with upcycled/found/used materials when possible. If possible I will incorporate found machinery/electronics. Thinking about mechanical analogs for ecosystem services has given me a new level of appreciation and awe for what nature does. It has made me question our technological focus at the expense of nature which ranges from dangerous geo-engineering to hopeful bio-mimicry projects.
