전 세계의 여러 곳에서, 곰은 토템 동물이었다. 곰은 신화의 대상이 되거나, 초능력을 가진 존재로 묘사되기도 했고, 의인화되기도 했다. 러시아에서 곰은 강한 권력, 거대한 크기, 잔혹한 성격을 전형적으로 보여주는 국가의 상징이 되었다.

‘Big Black Bear’라고 명명한 내 작품은 거대한 석탄덩어리이다. 불사조 신화처럼, 그 곰은 불에서 태어났고, 밤처럼 까맣다. 그 곰은 이 곳의 설화 속에서 잠시 머물다가 시간이 흘러 때가 되면, 발끝부터 재가 되어 올라가 별이 될 것이다.

In many nations of the world, a bear was a totem animal, people mythologized this beast, endowed it with superpowers to some extent, and even humanized it. In Russia, a bear has become a symbol of the whole country, personifying powerful power, huge size and severe temper.

My sculpture called the big black bear is a huge lump of coal. She, like a phoenix bird, was born out of fire, all dark as night. She will stay for a while in the folk tale at this place. After time passes, she will turn to ashes from the tips of her feet, then fly up and become a star.
