릴레이

‘릴레이’는 자연을 그린 스케치들을 담은 아크릴 박스가 숲 속 곳곳에 설치되어 관람객들을 안내하는 작품이다. 각각의 상자는 부분적으로 숨겨져 있으며 다음 상자 위치한 곳의 주변 환경을 사실적으로 그린 드로잉을 담고 있다. 이러한 역동적 설정은 관람객을 일련의 숲 속의 조용한 장소들로 안내한다. 그리고 상상력과 기억 그리고 자연의 관계에 대해 고찰하게 한다.

이 구성방식은 고대의 무역로에서 착안한 것으로 당시에는 목적지로 가는 길을 안내해주고 지역의 명소를 알려주는 이정표가 있었다.  (이러한 전통은 최근 현대적으로 변용되어 참가자들이 GPS 신호를 이용해 숨겨진 물건을 찾는 보물 찾기 게임  ‘지오캐칭’으로 재발명되었다.). 작품에서 각각의 드로잉은 관객들이 다음 장소를 찾을 수 있도록 해당 지역에 대한 설명을 포함한 것으로 모든 목적지들이 하나의 고리를 이룰 때까지 연결되어 있다. 이 프로젝트는 측면으로 이동하며 자연을 탐험하게 하여 명소나 기념물을 발견하는 즐거움 보다 소소한 발견들의 즐거움을 우선하게 한다. 씨앗이 흩뿌려지듯, 새가 이동하듯, 이 설치작품은 관람객들에게 그 지역의 다양한 곳을 살피게 한다.

Relay

Relay is a series of nature drawings encased in acrylic boxes that are installed in different locations throughout the forest in order to guide viewers. Each box is partially concealed and contains a realistic rendering of the setting of the next box (Site A contains a drawing of Site B, Site B contains a drawing of Site C, etc). This dynamic format guides viewers to a series of quiet locations in the forest and at the same time examines the relationships between imagery, memory, and nature.

The format for this artwork is drawn from ancient trade routes where milestones were used to mark a traveler’s progress or discover landmarks. (This tradition has recently been reinvented in ‘geocaching’, a contemporary variation, where participants use GPS signals to find totems in a scavenger hunt.) Each drawing in Relay will contain instructions for viewers to scan the landscape to find the next location, and the next, and the next, until the sites connect in a loop. The project encourages the exploration of nature in a lateral way, deprioritizing a single landmark or monument in favor of a series of small discoveries. Just as seeds spread or birds migrate, this installation inspires viewers to go on a journey to explore the diversity of land.
