​<플라스틱 시대 Plastic Age>

나는 주변에서 구할 수 있는 대상들을 가지고 하나의 풍경을 만들 계획이다. 그리고 기존의 경치에서 새로운 대상들을 만들 계획이다. 나는 시간과 공간에서 사라질 추억의 조각들을 남겨놓는 경향이 있다.

플라스틱은 최근 나의 예술적 이력에서 중요한 재료 중 하나였다. 재활용된 플라스틱, 플라스틱 쓰레기는 비용도 싸고, 주변에서 쉽게 구할 수 있다. 실로 그런 쓰레기는 “다이아몬드-수준”의 재료라고 할 수 있다. 다이아몬드처럼, 플라스틱은 오랫동안 지속되고, 썩지 않는다. 플라스틱은 자연환경을 오염시킨다. 더욱이나, 플라스틱 쓰레기는 인간의 DNA에 영향을 미친다. 플라스틱은 우리의 삶에 두 가지 영향을 미친다. 빠른 속도와 편리함이 유기적이고 중요한 문명 발전에 기여한다는 것이 사실인가?

지금 코로나 팬데믹 때문에 재택근무가 새로운 삶의 방식이 되었다. 우리는 집에서 더욱 많은 음식을 소비하면서 두 배의 플라스틱 쓰레기를 만든다. 나는 일상생활의 쓰레기를 가지고 작업을 함으로써, 이런 쓰레기들을 새로운 다이아몬드로 바꾸고자 한다.

밝고, 화려한 색상의 플라스틱 쓰레기는 다이아몬드처럼 눈부시게 빛나고 일상의 숲에서 넘쳐난다. 마이다스의 손은 순수하고 본질적인 예술적 행위라고 볼 수 있다.

I plan a landscape based on readymade objects available and create new objects from existed scenes. I tend to leave some remaining fragments of memories in time and space that are about to elapse…

Plastic has been one of the major creational materials in my recent artistic career. For me, recycled plastic or plastic waste does not cost much and is very available from our daily life waste, which could be considered as the “diamond-level” material. Like diamond, plastic could last for a lone time and it is not biodegradable. It rapidly submerges the earth and brings pollution to the existed natural environment. Moreover, plastic waste gets involved with mankind’s DNA. Plastic has two-fold impacts on our life. Is it true that fast-tempo and convenience attribute an organic and vital civilization development?

Now due to the pandemics, WFH(working from home) becomes a new life style. While we store more food at home, we also create double-sized household plastic waste. I intend to transform those waste into new diamond through artistic creation process with daily garbage and waste.

Those bright and colorful plastic wastes are dazzling like diamonds and flooded in the daily life forest. The Midas touch could be seen as a pure and essential artistic act.
