<계절이여, 잘가! Goodbye, Seasons!>

기후 변화로 인해 뚜렷한 계절의 구분이 사라지고 있다. 북반구에는 겨울이 예전보다 훨씬 따뜻하고, 때로는 2월에 봄 날씨가 찾아오고, 3월, 심지어 5월에 서리가 내리기도 한다. 올해 한국에서는 장마가 예년에 비해 굉장히 길었다. 유럽에서는 여름이 이례적으로 더웠을 뿐만 아니라(40°에서 44°C까지 올라가는 기온이 10일 이상 지속되었다), 예년보다 일찍 시작되었다(평년 기온보다 훨씬 추운 날도 며칠 있었다). 온대 지방에서는 과도기적 계절이라 할 수 있는 봄과 가을이 짧아지고 있다.

사계절이 두 개 혹은 세 개의 계절로 바뀌는 것인가? 온대기후가 대륙기후 혹은 열대기후로 바뀌는 것인가? 겨울이 가장 춥고, 여름이 가장 더운 것은 여전하겠지만, 전통적인 계절 구분이 조만간 무의미해질 수도 있다. 그래서 우리는 «계절이여, 잘가!»라고 작별인사를 해야 할지도 모른다.

그러나 만약 봄, 여름, 가을, 겨울이 사라지면, 우리는 일 년의 시간을 어떻게 구성할 수 있을까? 각 지역마다 365개의 작은 계절을 생각해야 하는가? 기상학자가 사용하는 도구들이 기후에 대한 이러한 관념을 재해석하도록 도와준다. 이 도구들은 주로 풍속, 햇빛, 기온, 습도의 측정과 해설에 관한 것이다.

우리가 만든 최소한의 설치물은 이 4가지 요소들과 만물의 주인인 시간에 대한 은유를 제공한다. 우리는 각 요소를 하나의 개념, 자연적 요소, 하나의 색으로 나타냈다: 바람은 노랑, 태양은 주황, 기온은 빨강, 습도는 파랑. 시간의 색은 검정과 빛인데, 밤과 낮을 의미한다.

Due to climate disruption, the disappearance of distinct seasons in all types of climate is very possible. In the northern hemisphere winters are much warmer, sometimes there is spring weather in February, and frost in March or even May. In Korea this year, the rain season was much longer than normal. In Europe, the summer is not only hotter than usual (40° to 44°C for more than 10 days), but also it began earlier than usual (although some days were much colder than the seasonal average). In temperate climates, transitional seasons (spring and autumn) are getting shorter.

Will the climates with 4 seasons change into climates with 2 or 3 seasons? Will the temperate climate become a continental or tropical climate? Even if the winter will stay the coldest period of the year and the summer the hottest, the traditional classification of climates will probably be invalid in the near future. All this indicates that seasons are disappearing and that we have to say: «Goodbye, Seasons!».

But what will help us to structure a year’s time if there is no more spring, summer, autumn and winter? Should we imagine a local climate with 365 mini-seasons for each region? The meteorologist’s tools can help us to reinterpret this notion of climate. These tools concern mainly the measurement of wind, sunshine, temperature and humidity and its interpretation.

Our minimalist installation offers a metaphor of these 4 elements, in combination with time, master of everything. We signify each element by a concept, natural elements and a color: yellow for the wind, orange for the sun, red for temperature, and blue for humidity. The color of time, black and light, evoke day and night time.
