<기본의 집 Home of Basics>

피난처(셸터)의 개념에 관심을 가지게 되었다. 피난처는 ‘집’이나 ‘주택’과 어떻게 다를까? 이러한 질문은 최근 난민 캠프의 확산과 주거비용 상승으로 인한 노숙 문제로 인해 더욱 깊어졌다. 피난처는 일시적인 보호를 제공하기 위한 곳인 반면, 집이나 주택은 보다 영구적인 보호와 함께 심리적 안정감을 제공한다고 여겨진다. 피난처는 거주자에게 소유권을 부여하지 않고 제공되는 반면, 집이나주택은 소유권과 함께 제공된다. 따라서 피난처는 유목 생활을 가능하게 하고, 집은 장기적 또는 영구적인 거주를 의미한다. 그렇다면 소유권이나 장기 거주에 대한 기대 없이도 피난처가 어떻게 집으로 변모하여 소속감, 평온함, 안락함을 줄 수 있을지 궁리한다.

셸터의 구조와 관련하여 특히 곡선형에 관심이 있다. 자연의 형태는 대개 원형으로, 자연의 흐름을 반영하는 반면, 인간이 만든 구조물은 종종 각이 지며 그 흐름을 방해하거나 끊는다. 나는 자연의 순환 흐름을 구현하면서도 평온함을 느낄 수 있는 구조를 만들려 한다. 하늘을 담도록 한 이 원형 구조물의 천창은 그 고요함을 불러일으키며, 동시에 하늘을 친밀하게 볼 수 있도록 하려는 의지로 고안했다. 

How is a ‘shelter’ different from a ‘home’ or ‘house’? A shelter is typically a place that provides temporary protection, unlike a home or house that ostensibly offers longer lasting protection along with psychological comfort. A shelter is provided to its occupants without conferring ownership, whereas a house or home comes with a sense of ownership. Thus, a shelter facilitates a nomadic life, while a home implies long term or permanent residency. I wonder in what way a shelter might become a home, conferring a sense of belonging, calm, and comfort, without the anticipation of ownership or long-term residency.

Regarding the construction of shelters, I am particularly interested in cone-shaped shelters. Natural forms tend to be circular, reflecting the flow of nature, while human-made structures are often more angular, interrupting that flow. My goal is to create a structure that embodies the circular flow of nature while also fostering a sense of calm. The skylight of this circular structure is designed to evoke serenity, while offering an intimate view of the sky.
