<둥지> Nest

2년 전, 스웨덴 우메오대학교에서 사자 보전을 연구하는 연구팀과 함께 탄자니아 북부, 세렝게티 깊숙한 곳에서 레지던시에 참여했다. 연구팀의 연구 주제와는 조금 다르게, 나는 다양한 새들의 둥지를 관찰하고 연구했다. 우리는 오랜 시간 동안 매우 건조한 

환경에서 작업했는데, 이러한 조건을 견딜 수 있는 종은 많지 않았고 그중 하나가 아카시아나무였다. 이 나무의 가장 바깥쪽 가지에는 특별한 새가 둥지를 짓는다. 둥지는 새의 움직임과 바람에 따라 흔들리며 가지 끝에 매달려 있다. 바로 위버새(Weaver Bird)다. 위버새는 아카시아나무에 서식하며 주변에서 발견한 풀과 약초를 이용해 놀라운 형태의 둥지를 만든다.

나 역시 위버새처럼 식물 섬유를 재료로 작업한다. 나는 기억과 꿈, 비밀을 담는 캡슐이자 은밀한 장소를 만든다. 이들은 위버새의 둥지를 닮았지만, 그 안에는 인간의 꿈과 기억이 담긴다. 그중 일부는 이제 하나의 그물에 뒤엉켜 있다. 그곳에서 꿈과 기억은 

자유롭게 생각할 권리를 포식하고 식민화하려는 힘에 맞서 자신의 존재를 지켜내기 위해 싸워야 한다.

Two years ago, I was on a residency in northern Tanzania, far out in the Serengeti, together with a research team from Umeå University in Sweden whose research focused on lion conservation. My art project was a little different, as I studied 

different birds‘ nests. For long periods of time, we worked in very dry environments where only a limited number of species can handle those conditions, one of which is the Acacia tree. In these trees, a special bird builds its nests farthest out on the branches, swaying with the birds' movements and the wind. This is the Weaver Bird, which lives in these trees and builds fantastic nests from grass and herbs that it finds.

In my artistic practice, like the Weaver Bird, I work with plant fibers. I make capsules and secret places—capsules for memories, dreams, or secrets. They mimic the Weaver Bird's nests but carry human dreams and memories. Some of these are 

now entangled in a net, where dreams and memories must fight for their existence against the predation and colonization of the right to free thinking.
